For many people age 70½ and older, a gift from an IRA can be a simple and effective way to support the Capuchin friars. This type of gift – known as a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) – allows you to direct funds from your IRA to charity while potentially reducing your taxable income.

A QCD allows you to make a meaningful gift today, using assets you may not need for current living expenses.

What Is a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD)?

A Qualified Charitable Distribution is a direct transfer from your IRA to a qualified charitable organization, such as the Capuchin friars. QCDs are sometimes referred to as IRA charitable rollovers.

To qualify:

  • You must be age 70½ or older at the time of the gift

  • The gift must come directly from your IRA

  • The funds must be transferred directly to the charity

When completed properly, the amount transferred may be excluded from your taxable income.

How to Make a Gift from Your IRA

  1. Contact your IRA custodian and request information about making a Qualified Charitable Distribution.

  2. Complete the custodian’s form or provide written instructions directing the gift to the Capuchins.

  3. Ask that the funds be sent directly from your IRA to the Capuchins.

  4. Consider notifying us of your gift so we may ensure proper acknowledgment and express our gratitude.
