For many donors, appreciated assets – such as publicly traded securities – offer a meaningful way to support the Capuchin friars while also making careful use of financial resources. A gift of appreciated assets can be a simple and effective alternative to a cash gift.
This approach allows you to support the Capuchins using assets that may have increased in value over time.
What Are Appreciated Assets?
Appreciated assets are assets that have grown in value since they were acquired. Common examples include:
-
Publicly traded stocks
-
Mutual funds
When these assets are given directly to charity, they may offer advantages that are not available when the same assets are sold and the proceeds given as cash.
Why Consider a Gift of Appreciated Assets?
Many donors find gifts of appreciated assets appealing because they can be:
-
Tax-wise – You may be able to avoid capital gains taxes that would otherwise be due upon sale
-
Impactful – The full fair-market value of the asset may support the Capuchin friars
-
Efficient – A single gift of appreciated assets can sometimes have a greater impact than an equivalent cash gift
-
Flexible – Gifts may be made outright or as part of a broader charitable plan
For some donors, this is a natural extension of annual giving. For others, it becomes a way to make a larger or more meaningful gift than might otherwise be possible.
A Thoughtful Way to Give
Gifts of appreciated assets can be especially appropriate for donors who have held securities for many years or who wish to rebalance their portfolios while supporting charitable causes they value, including the Capuchin friars.
Because each situation is unique, these gifts are best considered in light of your overall financial and charitable goals.
